Technology Workshop - Data-Driven Teaching Reflection The Data-Based Instruction technology workshop I developed for ITEC 7460: Professional Learning and Technology Innovation was designed to model the ease with which teachers can use Google Forms plus the Flubaroo add-on to collect and analyze student assessment data. The workshop, available freely online to anyone accessing the link, provides step-by-step instructions and tutorials for creating Google Forms formative and summative assessments. Embedded in the workshop Instructional Agenda is time for teachers to work on their own Google Forms assessments, a task I helped facilitate. Standard 2.7 requires that candidates model and facilitate the use of varied assessments for data collection and analysis. The goal of this artifact workshop was to demonstrate the ease with which data collection and analysis can be done using current technology, like Google Forms—a digital, cloud-based survey tool—and its add-on applications—particularly Flubaroo, a data analysis and notification service. The workshop demonstrated and emphasized that Google Forms surveys can be written in diagnostic, formative, and/or summative assessment form. Those surveys can be manipulated to befit any possible content and can be easily accessed from any device connected to the wifi or to a data plan. Data from the surveys can be used to inform whole-group or individual instruction, email remediation, or encourage advancement. Completion of this artifact revealed a startling and sad truth: a large number of teachers has turned complacent and would rather ignore technology than work to enhance student learning with it. Despite hearty marketing, few teachers attended my lesson. Those that did, however, loved it, as evidenced by their glowing post-survey responses. I will repeat this lesson at the beginning of the school year to any colleagues who will listen—the workshop took place at the end of the semester, and this kind of innovation is best set in motion at the beginning of each course. Teacher feedback about this artifact demonstrates honest interest in utilizing Google Forms and its add-on, Flubaroo, for diagnostic, formative, and/or summative assessments next year. Doing so will make data collection and discussions during collaborative meetings easier and more meaningful. This impact of school improvement can be measured using student performance data after implementing new strategies based on the available data. |
